 Highlighting the deception used in going to war with Iraq

He’s Right! The President Never Said That

“First, just if I might correct a misperception. I don't think we ever said -- at least I know I didn't say that there was a direct connection between September the 11th and Saddam Hussein. We did say that he was a state sponsor of terror…
but I was very careful never to say that Saddam Hussein ordered the attacks on America”.

Can you do me a favor? Ask your co-workers, neighbors or family members if Saddam Hussein had anything to do with 9/11? I’ll wait until you tell me they do! Ok! You’re back?
Well for once, I’d like to announce my full agreement with President Bush! As far as I’ve been able to determine, he or members of his administration have Never directly (keep that word DIRECTLY in mind) tied Saddam Hussein to the events of 9/11.

I came to that conclusion after sifting through hundreds of speeches, news conferences and photo-ops posted on the White House web site (http://whitehouse.gov)
When the President cleared up that “misperception” in Cleveland on Monday, I’d thought for sure, at the time, he’d had a well intended memory lapse. And it seems by Tuesday everybody who’d ever brandished a reporter’s notebook sprung forth with statements that seemed to come close to contradicting the President.
Heck! I even found a few!
Saddam Hussein is a threat to our nation. September the 11th changed the strategic thinking, at least, as far as I was concerned, for how to protect our country. (March 6, 2003 – A speech titled: President George Bush Discusses Iraq in National Press Conference)

But that’s about as close as I ever got to a “smoking gun”. But after a two day search, I discovered something more startling than a mere memory lapse, or a President fib. I feel I’ve found that there had been concerted effort by somebody in the Bush Administration to make sure all White House speeches leading up to the War in Iraq dripped with the phrases September 11, 2001 or Al Qaeda. And that the words Saddam Hussein and Iraq were always in close proximity to them!

(March 3, 2003 – The then National Security Advisor – Condoleezza Rice) The coalition currently assembled to disarm Iraq shows the way. Together, we are determined to do all we can to prevent Saddam Hussein or terrorists with his weapons, from repeating September 11 on a vaster scale.

Once again, no smoking gun, in the Dick Cheney sense of the word!
It’s no wonder that that major news outlets went scrambling for proof the President or Administration officials had tied Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda into one nice, neat little 9/11 plot. The hints they, and the American public, had been given during the run-up to the war were so strong most of us may have sworn somebody up there had connected those dots somewhere along the line. In fact, the President’s “misperception” correction was mysteriously like a number of “misperception” corrections I found in news conferences not long after the war got underway.

In fact, you may have to draw one nasty little conclusion about all of these “misperception” corrections. That Wal-Mart can’t sell the way the White House can.

In fact, this week President Bush has launched some more campaigns. His first seems to hammer home the word terror, terrorism or terrorist. That Cleveland speech had 89 forms of the word. And then there’s the newly resurrected (and I might add silly) campaign. The one that always seems to get pulled out, and dusted off when Iraq seems to be on the verge of collapse. That the news media isn’t telling the American public about the “good stuff” that’s happening over there.
I’d have to say that that’s the White House’s fault. The marketing campaign was so well mounted to get the news media (and not to mention the American public) to buy the need for war, that the news media can’t help it. It’s covering the war. Not the new schools. Not the new hospitals. Not the new roads. Not the new DVD players. Not the new Wal-Marts. The war! The one that needed well-placed hints that were so skillful, even the US Congress fell for it.
