Ann Coulter - Attacking Clinton and Defending Scooter Libby

The Case Against Bill Clinton - Again

By Al Owens
I’ve got to hand it to Ann Coulter. It took her all of 259 words before she typed the words ‘Bill Clinton’ this week. One of these days, I think she’ll get through an entire column without making a single mention.

This week, she uses the occasion of the “Scooter” Libby trial to segue into her favorite target – the only president in the past twelve years who actually didn’t start a war nobody can figure out how to stop – Bill Clinton.

I’d like to engage in a vigorous political debate about the “Scooter” Libby case, but I haven’t been paying much attention to it. I do know a federal prosecutor claims Libby lied. He was a member of the Bush Administration, what do you expect?

I do know that nobody in the Bush White House admits they were pulling the wool over the public’s eye when George W. Bush highlighted his 2003 pre-Iraq pep rally (Some people call it a State of the Union Message) with the words: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa"

Then came an investigation that turned up little proof the statement was accurate. Then came the revelation that the person sent to Africa to find out about the dangerous stuff is married to a person who’d been a CIA undercover operative. Then came an indictment, and now comes a trial.

I’m sorry if I’ve not paid much attention to any of the finer points of this thing. It’s not exactly Watergate.

Although I’m sure there were people like Ann Coulter during Watergate who probably compared Richard Nixon to Bill Clinton – even though Clinton wouldn’t become president until two decades later.

They’ll be trying to get Bill Clinton impeached for the next 50 years. Please tell these people you can’t impeach a guy who’s been out of office for eight years. Conservatives just know how to beat a dead horse. Somebody put extra security on Barbaro!

Even if “Scooter” Libby didn’t do what he’s on trial for doing (perjury) – he should get hard time for calling himself “Scooter” well past his teens. But then again, if he didn’t perjure himself, who in the White House was so paranoid they wanted the world to know that Joe Wilson, the CIA operative’s husband, was worthy of being discredited by saying he was, in fact, a CIA operative’s husband?

The fact is the Bush White House is forever trying to cover its own tracks. It’s a wonder there aren’t about a dozen perjury trials going on down in Washington at the same time.

I’m not claiming that Bush is surrounded by liars and cheats, just a lot of people who’d do anything to prove their points. Most of the time, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter handle their cover-ups for them. They pass that stuff off as news, you know.

“Scooter” Libby probably did made one big mistake. He didn’t filter his information through Ann Coulter first. That way, she could still be outing Wilson’s wife with every column, and nobody would be facing federal charges, because she’d say it was only a joke.

All of this because the President of the United States was so pumped up about rallying this country in support of a war effort that eventually didn’t add up. I can remember when I thought Saddam Hussein might jump from behind my shower curtain. Saddam’s gone, but now I have the same anxieties about my own government.
But conservatives keep telling us they’re working on our behalf. That the ex-chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney – “Scooter” Libby - is paying too heavy a price for only being a tad bit curious.

The fact is a little curiosity never hurt anybody. That is, unless the real motive is to protect a reckless statement, made by a trigger happy president. Somebody should certainly face charges for that.
