Ann Coulter - Twisted views about what multi-cultural means

Ann Coulter’s Rice Recipe

By Al Owens
I’m a little confused about something. I just read an Ann Coulter column that contains the phrase, “I thought we had moved beyond such multicultural milestones,” then she spends the next 14 paragraphs talking about MULTICULTURAL MILESTONES. Hum?

Of course we all know Nancy Pelosi will become the nation’s first female Speaker of the House. Of course we also know that Condoleezza Rice is the first black woman to become U.S. Secretary of State. What Ann Coulter wants to let you know is they’re paying far too much attention to Pelosi’s milestone, but not nearly enough attention to Rice’s.

Coulter went milestone hunting, and – to me – shot some blanks. Rice isn’t the first black PERSON to become Secretary of State. Colin Powell was. Rice isn’t the first WOMAN either. Madelyn Albright (a Clinton appointee) was. Nancy Pelosi, on the other hand, will be the first woman who’ll be just a couple of heartbeats away from becoming President of the United States. Condoleezza Rice won’t be. Maybe that’s why Pelosi’s milestone may trump Rice’s.

I’m not sure any of this matters, except to Ann Coulter. I want you to know that I’m the first black man to ever say that! The question is will Ann Coulter give me a whole paragraph for saying it?

For the life of me I don’t understand why the right seems so prone to dunderheadedness when dealing with matters involving race. Coulter, for instance, seems to be trying to make some kind of point about the “liberal media” supposedly overlooking the Bush Administration’s inclusion of all kinds of people (woman, black people, maybe even midgets – I haven’t looked lately) in the President’s cabinet. George Bush, so implies Coulter, needs credit for that. Why he’s surrounded himself with Jackie Robinson-types. Let’s all put our hands together and give the President of the United States a round of applause. Now take one of those hands and cover our nose.

The same person who trumpets a black woman who now heads The United States Department of State this week, aimed cheap shots at a couple potential African American Committee Chairman a couple of weeks ago. I wonder what’s changed in 14 days. Maybe the recent election was too much for her to handle.

After all, she’d called one of those black congressmen, John Conyers, Jr. of Michigan, “another finalist for the coveted ‘craziest Democrat in congress’ title’. Now she’s upset because people of color in the Bush Administration haven’t been nominated for Mt. Rushmore by the media.

It could be that the “liberal media” is as smart as most African-Americans. We both know window dressing when we see it.

When the 110th United States Congress convenes on January 3rd, there will be 41 African Americans eager to perform their congressional functions. None will be a Republican. It’s a fact that seems to confound the right. Especially since Republicans keep making efforts to “showcase” African-American candidates like Pennsylvania’s Lynn Swann, Maryland’s Michael Steele and Ohio’s Ken Blackwell. All three black Republicans who lost badly. Perhaps because black voters still remain suspicious of a political party that only seems to pay attention to them ‘round election time.

Swann, Blackwell and Steele may be black, but they speak Republican. That’s why they didn’t get the black vote.

But have no fear, America’s leading racial “uniter” Ann Coulter will help solve that problem. That is, after black voters forget she reminded them last August that Maxine Waters, a black Congresswoman from California who happens to support affirmative action, “without which (according to Ann) she would not have a job that didn't involve wearing a paper hat”.

So the Bush Administration scours sideshows around the world to populate its cabinet with milestones. While right wingers like Ann Coulter go out of their way to practice the soft bigotry of low blow expectations.
Ann, you’re a pip!

Of course, while she feigns concern about the disparity in how Pelosi and Rice have been treated by the media, she resorts to the bottom line. That Nancy Pelosi is going to kill all of us. And you know what? I can’t wait!
