Synopsis

Ann Coulter - Responding to Ann Coulter's feelings about immigration

Vaya Con Dios Fräulein Coulter

By Al Owens

Bingo! Ann Coulter has really gone too far this time. Why she’s called the President of the Whole United States of America “really stupid.” I can’t wait for the ultra-conservative backlash on this one.

I’m one of those archetypical liberals, but I’d never, ever call George W. Bush “really stupid.” I'd bet though, that when he watches Jeopardy he complains because nobody ever buys any vowels. But that's not stupid. Just a little confused. Who could blame him? He's got other things on his mind these days, like his political base calling him "really stupid." He’s earned Ann Coulter’s wrath for continuing to push that immigration reform bill, despite her column last week – that essentially made fun of anybody who didn’t initiate the process of sending every Mexican back to where they came from.

But I’m most fascinated by the absence of one word in her column this week that made last week’s column seem, by comparison, sane. It’s the word “illegal.”

Even people I suspect are racists, get a pass, when they claim it’s not about Mexicans – it’s about them being here illegally. I still believe they’re racists, but at least they use the good judgment to try to hide it.

Ann Coulter doesn’t even try to hide it. She’s championing the purity of white Anglo-Saxon Protestants everywhere. It’s mean-spirited and it’s “really stupid.”

The British Empire, according to Ann Coulter, has historically spread its goodwill like pixie dust all over the planet. George Washington must have been “really stupid” too! He wasn’t buying all of that pixie dust nonsense.

Nor did the people of India, who’d seen so much of that good ole British Empire’s “largesse”, it finally threw off British rule in 1947. But not before the British had shamed themselves in the eyes of the rest of the world.

So American culture is in jeopardy of becoming something, less white, less Anglo, less Saxon, less Protestant than is comfortable for white Anglo-Saxon Protestants? I’m none of those things. I feel your pain.

But I’ve found somebody who would have agreed wholeheartedly with Ann Coulter about the superiority of Anglo-Saxons, and the threat non-Anglo-Saxons could pose to pristine cultures. His name was Adolf Hitler. Still not convinced? “If we were to divide mankind into three groups, the founders of culture, the bearers of culture, the destroyers of culture, only the Aryan could be considered as the representative of the first group.” (Mein Kampf, Volume I, A Reckoning, Chapter XI: Nation and Race)

Sorry Adolf, I still don’t feel we, as Americans, are losing our identity – just because you and Ann Coulter say we are. We’re bigger than that. We’ve always been bigger than that.

This country has always been able to absorb the influences brought here from other parts of the world, without the need to build fallout shelters to avoid them.

Yet, we’re being warned that we’re replacing American culture with “Latin American culture.” This will lead us all to scheme up protests, as if Americans had never done that before. Our nation exists because people protested. (It was that tea thing, remember?)

If people hadn’t protested, some people (women and African Americans) may still not be able to vote.
Protest is a wholly American thing to do. Latinos who protest are being as American as, well, apple pie. (Apple pie, by the way, didn’t originate in American. It was brought here by Europeans) Let’s ban apple pie!

“Americans,” under the watchful eye of Ann Coulter, “display no evident desire to defend our culture.” Defend it against what I might ask? Latinos? Mexicans? Field mice? What?

Keeping the “wrong” kind of people out of the country (or throwing them out) was one of those things Adolf Hitler admired about us back when he wrote Mein Kampf. “By excluding certain races from the right to become naturalized as citizens, they (The U.S.A.) have begun to introduce principles similar to those on which we wish to ground the People's State.”

Oh, I know you’re tiring of all of these Adolf Hitler references, but he’s the benchmark for self-preservation in the face of vague infestations. Ann Coulter selects a contemporary voice that seems to be saying the very same thing. Samuel P. Huntington is the Harvard political scientist whom she quotes this week.

His book “Who Are We: The Challenge to America’s National Identity,” is her choice to support this twisted, racist nonsense.

The same Samuel P. Huntington who predicts in that same book there will eventually be a movement of white nativism, he believes will find that the "mixing of races and hence culture is the road to national degeneration." Ann Coulter quotes this man? Why not just quote Adolf Hitler who at least made it poetic? “The Germanic inhabitant of the American continent, who has remained racially pure and unmixed, rose to be master of the continent; he will remain the master as long as he does not fall a victim to defilement of the blood. The result of all racial crossing is therefore in brief always the following: Lowering of the level of the higher race; Physical and intellectual regression and hence the beginning of a slowly but surely progressing sickness.”

To Huntington, it’s a prediction, to Hitler it was a warning but Ann Coulter just wants that to be our boogeyman.

By all means, let’s fix immigration. But please don’t do it on these grounds!
